In short: A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a slice of a powerful server, split using virtualization, that works as an independent server with dedicated resources (CPU, RAM and storage) and full root access. Unlike shared hosting, you don’t share resources with other websites.
What is a VPS? #
A large physical server is divided into several isolated virtual servers. Each VPS runs its own operating system and has a fixed share of CPU, RAM and storage that no one else uses. You control it like a full server: install any software and change settings freely.
Shared hosting vs. VPS vs. dedicated server #
| Shared hosting | VPS | Dedicated server | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resources | Shared with other sites, with limits | Dedicated and guaranteed | The whole server |
| Control | cPanel only | Full root access | Full access |
| Performance | Good for small and medium sites | High and consistent | Highest |
| Management | Handled by the host | You, or we manage it for you | You or a specialist team |
| Cost | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
| Best for | Beginners and company sites | Large sites, stores and apps | Very large projects |
When should you move to a VPS? #
- Your site has become slow or you hit resource limits as traffic grows.
- You need software or versions shared hosting doesn’t allow (such as Node.js, Docker or a specific database).
- You run several large sites or a busy online store.
- You need an isolated, secure environment for a company app or system.
- You want to offer hosting to your own clients.
VPS advantages #
- Guaranteed resources: consistent performance not affected by other sites.
- Full control: root access and your choice of operating system.
- Scalability: add resources as you grow, without losing data.
- Better isolation and security: your environment is separate from others.
Managed or unmanaged VPS? #
Unmanaged: you get the server and handle software, updates and security yourself. Suitable if you have technical experience.
Managed: our team manages, secures and updates the server for you at an extra cost. See server management.
