Saudi Domain Registration Criteria: When Is a Domain Name Accepted or Rejected?

A domain name being available is not enough: the Saudi domain name registration regulations require a link between the domain name and the registrant. Here we explain these criteria in plain language with the official accepted and rejected examples, and test your understanding before you register.

In short: Saudi domain registration criteria require the domain name to be linked to the registrant in one of four ways: matching, logically abbreviating or deriving from their name; matching a registered trademark they own; having a close relationship to them such as a product or service; or, for individuals, being a personal name under conditions. The registrant must prove the link, and every request is assessed on its own.

Saudi domain name rules: four principles before the criteria

Guiding criteriaIssued by the center under paragraph (4/4) of the regulations; they do not in themselves give a right to register or keep a name.
The registrant proves itThe registrant must provide proof of the link between the name and themselves, and protect the names they want.
Checks can repeatThe center may verify the link even after registration, periodically, at random, or when there is an objection.
Each request aloneAccepting "بيوت-زيد.السعودية" for Zaid Real Estate does not justify "بيوت-عمر.السعودية" for Omar's company.

Why do these criteria exist? Because a Saudi domain carries the national identity, tying the name to its real owner protects trade names and trademarks from being registered for bargaining or impersonation, and lets visitors trust the site really belongs to the entity it is named after. That is why a name can look available in search and still be rejected at review.

The four criteria linking a domain name to its registrant

Choose the criterion that applies to you to see its conditions and the official accepted and rejected examples.

Criterion 1: linked to the registrant's name

The clearest path is a domain name linked to the name the registrant used to prove eligibility, in Arabic or English, in one of three forms:

1.1 Matches the nameExactly matches one or more words of the registrant's name, in the same order, without ambiguity.
1.2 A logical abbreviationA shortened word or acronym that reflects the name in sound and meaning, more common in English.
1.3 Derived from the nameWriting the name in another script (transliteration), translating it, or adding words about the activity; proof may be requested.

Example: the official name is "شركة السعادة الأبدية للتجارة - Eternal Happiness Company for Trading", known as "Ehco إهيكو".

✓ Accepted examples

  • شركةالسعادةالأبدية.السعودية
  • شركة-السعادة-الأبدية.السعودية

  • إهيكو.السعودية
  • Eternalhappiness.sa
  • Eternalhappiness.com.sa
  • Eternal-happiness.sa
  • happiness.sa
  • AlSaadah-Alabadiah.sa
  • Sa3dah.sa
  • ehc-portal.sa
  • ehc.com.sa
  • ehco.sa
  • ehc.sa
  • eh.sa
  • aa.com.sa

✗ Rejected examples

  • س-أ.السعودية
  • سا.السعودية
  • ec.sa
  • hec.sa
  • شركة.السعودية
  • للتجارة.السعودية
  • السعادة-عقارات.السعودية
  • Company.sa
  • HappinessMarriage.sa

Criterion 2: linked to a trademark

A domain name is accepted if it exactly matches a registered trademark owned by the registrant, with nothing added or removed, except symbols not usable in domains such as $, @ and ?. It may also be derived by removing letters or words, adding a word or symbol, or transliterating it, but abbreviations are not accepted under this criterion, and an explanation of a derived name may be requested.

First trademark: "وطني" (Watany), registered to Eternal Happiness Company for Trading under food products.

✓ Accepted examples

  • وطني.السعودية
  • وطني-السعادة.السعودية
  • أغذية-وطني.السعودية
  • watany.sa
  • HappinessWatany.sa
  • HappinessWatanyFoods.sa

✗ Rejected examples

  • ناشونال.السعودية
  • National.sa
  • hw.sa

Second trademark: "Eternal Happiness", registered to the same company.

✓ Accepted examples

  • إيتيرنال-هابينيس.السعودية
  • Eternal-Happiness.sa

✗ Rejected examples

  • السعادة-الأبدية.السعودية
  • EH.sa

Criterion 3: a close relationship to the registrant

This criterion gives flexibility to registrants who want a name not tied to their official name or trademark, but which points to something of theirs clearly, without abbreviation or infringing others' rights. Examples of a close relationship:

  • Products the registrant makes or markets.
  • A service the registrant provides.
  • An event the registrant organizes, sponsors or holds.
  • A project or venue the registrant operates or manages.
  • The profession or trade practised by the registrant or their staff.

At registration you may be asked to prove this relationship in detail, covering three points:

What does the name mean? What its letters and words stand for.
What is it for?Why it is registered and how it relates to the registrant.
Who is it for?The services offered through it and the target audience.

Criterion 4: domains for individuals

Individuals can register under .pub.sa, .sa and .السعودية as set out in the registration regulations:

4.1 A personal name with a numberA first name or family name (such as Ahmad or Alfulani) followed by one or more digits.
Or two names togetherTwo or more names may be combined without digits.
4.2 Other namesPossible without infringing others' rights, after explaining what the name means, its purpose, services and audience.

Example: the individual's name is "Ahmad Alfulani" (أحمد الفلاني).

✓ Accepted examples

  • ahmad7.pub.sa
  • alfulani01.sa
  • أحمد7.السعودية
  • ahmadalfulani.pub.sa
  • أحمد-الفلاني.السعودية

✗ Rejected examples

  • أحمد.السعودية
  • الفلاني.السعودية
  • ahmad.sa
  • alfulani.sa

How abbreviations are accepted in a Saudi domain name

A logical abbreviation of the registrant's name is accepted under criterion 1, and is more common in English because Arabic words rarely split. These are the accepted forms:

First letter of the word

The simplest form.

meterm
pagep
FahrenheitF
NorthN
The first letters

Provided it is common practice.

Continuedcont
InternationalInter
volumevol
NetworkNet
Selected letters

Provided it is common practice.

assistantasst

kilometerkm
sergeantSgt
Acronyms

The first letter of each word in a phrase.

Network Information CenterNIC

Bachelor of ScienceBSc

Words ignored when abbreviating:

co.ltd.companyestablishmentgrouplimitedthe Arabic "al"for tradingfor investmentowner's name phraseaantheofwith

Forms may be combined or a substitute word used (like 4u for "For you"), as long as the result reflects the registrant in sound and meaning. An official example is SaudiNIC.net.sa, formed from Saudi Network Information Center. In Arabic abbreviation is rare, for example ص ب for P.O. Box and س ت for commercial registration.

Before you apply: check your domain name in six points

Most Saudi domain rejections or delays come from a name not clearly linked to the registrant. This quick list lets you apply the criteria yourself:

Does it match your official name or part of it?Compare it with the name on your CR or ID, word for word and in the same order.
If it is an abbreviation, is it logical? It must reflect the name in sound and meaning, after ignoring words like company, establishment and "for trading".
If it is a trademark, is it registered to you?Have the trademark certificate ready, and remember abbreviating a trademark is not accepted.
If it is a product or service, can you explain it?Write what the name means, why you register it and who it is for, before you are asked.
Individuals: did you add a number or a second name?A first or family name alone needs a number, or combine two names.
Does it infringe someone else's rights?Avoid names of companies or brands known to belong to others, even if the domain looks available.
What if the name is rejected? A rejection is not the end. Often it is enough to adjust the name to match the establishment name in the CR, provide proof of the link to a trademark or product, or choose an extension that fits your entity. That is why at Hyyat Host we review the name and documents before submitting and suggest the closest alternative if needed, so your activation is not delayed.

Saudi domain criteria FAQ

What are the Saudi domain registration criteria?

Guiding criteria issued by the Saudi Network Information Center to determine the link between a domain name and its registrant, under paragraph (4/4) of the Saudi domain name registration regulations. They set four ways: the registrant's name, a trademark they own, a close relationship, or a personal name for individuals under conditions.

Is it enough for a Saudi domain name to be available?

No. The name must also be linked to the registrant under the criteria, the registrant must prove the link, and the center may verify it even after registration.

Is an abbreviation of my company name accepted?

Yes, if it is a logical abbreviation reflecting the registrant's name in sound and meaning, such as ehc.sa for Eternal Happiness Company. Abbreviations are not accepted under the trademark criterion, though.

Can I register a translation of my trademark?

Per the official examples, writing the trademark in another script is accepted, like watany.sa for "وطني", while translating it into another word, like National.sa, is not.

Can an individual register just their first name?

A first or family name alone must be followed by one or more digits, such as ahmad7.pub.sa, or two names can be combined without digits, such as أحمد-الفلاني.السعودية.

What does a close relationship mean?

The domain name points to something of the registrant's, such as a product they make, a service they provide, an event they organize, a project they run or a profession they practise, without ambiguity or abbreviation; you may be asked to explain its purpose, services and audience.

If a similar name was accepted for another company, will mine be accepted?

No. Each request is assessed on its own, without linking it to earlier decisions.

Which words are ignored when abbreviating?

Words such as company, establishment, group, limited, co., ltd. and the Arabic "al", activity phrases like "for trading", and words like the and of.

Do the criteria apply to every Saudi extension?

The criteria define how the domain name relates to the registrant for Saudi domains, and in addition each extension is reserved for a category: for example .com.sa for commercial businesses, .pub.sa for individuals, .edu.sa for education and .med.sa for health providers.

Does Hyyat Host review my domain name before submitting?

Yes, we review the name and your documents before submitting so the request is not rejected or delayed, then follow the Nafath verification until activation. Renewal is 99 Saudi riyals a year, and the first year includes registration and verification fees.
