What to Do If the Domain Name You Want Is Already Taken

Updated: 5 Oct 20266 min readDomains and Saudi domains
In short: if the domain name you want is already taken: try another extension (such as .sa, .com.sa or .net), add a short word to the name (such as get or ksa), contact the owner to buy it, or watch it until it expires. If the name is your registered trademark, you may have a legal right to claim it.

You choose a name for your company or project, search for it with excitement, and then see the message: domain taken. Most business owners go through this, because millions of short, clear names are already registered. The good news is that the answer is rarely to give up on your idea. There are practical ways to get a suitable domain; some take minutes and some need patience. This guide orders them from easiest to hardest, with what we advise our customers in each case.

First, check: is the domain really in use?

Before looking for an alternative, open the taken domain in your browser and see what is on it:

  • An active site of another business: the name is in use, and it is usually better to look for an alternative or another extension.
  • A “this domain is for sale” page: the owner is offering it for sale, and you can negotiate.
  • A blank page or ads: the domain is registered but unused, and it may expire without renewal.

You can also find the expiry date and the registrar through a Whois lookup. To check several extensions of the same name at once, use the Hyyat Host domain availability checker, which checks global and Saudi domains live.

6 practical options when a domain is taken

1. Change the extension

If the .com is taken, the same name may be available with another extension. For businesses operating in Saudi Arabia, .sa and .com.sa are strong choices because they give a clear local identity. There are also general extensions such as .net, .co and .online. Choose an extension your customers will remember easily, and avoid unusual ones you would have to explain every time.

2. Adjust the name with a short word

Adding a simple word before or after the name often solves the problem: for example get or my before the name, or ksa, your city or your type of business after it. If alnoor.com is taken, you may find alnoor-riyadh.com or alnoorclinic.com available. What matters is that the name stays short and easy to say and type.

3. Buy the domain from its owner

You can offer to buy the domain from its current owner. If the Whois details are public, contact them directly; otherwise look for contact details on their website or on the sale page if there is one. Before negotiating, set a maximum budget and do not show that the name is essential to you, as that raises the price. Once you agree, use a trusted escrow service that holds the payment until the domain is transferred to you, and never send money before the transfer is secured. Keep in mind the owner may refuse to sell or ask a very high price.

4. Watch the domain until it expires

Many domains are not renewed by their owners. Check the expiry date through Whois and follow it as the date approaches. After a domain expires it does not become available immediately: it goes through grace and redemption periods during which the owner can still renew it, usually lasting several weeks, before it is deleted and becomes available to the first person who registers it. This option needs patience, and there is no guarantee the owner will let it go.

5. If the name is your trademark

If you own a registered trademark for this name and the domain is being used in bad faith, for example to imitate your business or to sell it to you at an inflated price, you may be able to claim it through the dispute resolution policy of that extension. These procedures have conditions and costs, so consult a lawyer who specialises in intellectual property before starting, and do not rely on this option if the owner uses the domain for a different business in good faith.

6. Come up with a new name

Sometimes the best answer is a completely new name, especially if you have not built your brand yet. If another business already uses the name you want, customers may confuse the two of you and you may face legal problems later. A short, distinctive new name gives you your own identity from day one.

How to choose between these options

The right choice depends on your project’s stage and budget. If you are just starting and have not printed a logo or business cards yet, the fastest and cheapest route is to adjust the name or choose a Saudi extension and start working today. If you already run a business with a name your customers know, it may be worth trying to buy the domain from its owner, while registering a temporary alternative so your website and email do not stop. Treat watching a domain until it expires as a backup plan rather than your only plan, because you do not know when, or whether, the owner will let it go.

One tip we give our customers: if your budget allows, register more than one extension for an important name, such as .com and .sa together. This protects your name from being registered by someone else later, and you can point the extra domains to your main website.

Mistakes to avoid when looking for an alternative

  • Lots of hyphens and numbers: hard to say and type, and customers make mistakes when typing them.
  • Odd spellings: such as swapping letters to avoid the taken name, which sends your visitors to the other site by mistake.
  • Very long names: the shorter the name, the easier it is to remember and to use for business email.
  • Imitating a known brand: it exposes you to legal claims, and you may lose the domain later.

A smart alternative: a Saudi domain

If the .com is taken and your business is in Saudi Arabia, .sa, .com.sa or .السعودية may be available, giving your site a local identity and more trust among customers in the Kingdom. See Saudi domain registration.

Found the name? Register it now

Good names are taken quickly, so do not delay once you find a suitable one. After registering, turn on auto-renewal or note the renewal date, so you do not lose the domain after building your website and business email on it.
