# How to Update WordPress and Plugins Safely Without Breaking Your Site

**In short**Updating is the most important step for WordPress security, because most hacks exploit flaws in old versions. But an update can occasionally break a site. The safe way: take a backup, then update plugins one by one, then the theme, then WordPress, and test the site after each step. If something breaks, you know the cause at once and can roll back.

## Why not postpone updates?

When a flaw in a plugin is fixed, its description is published. Attackers read the same description and start scanning sites that have not updated yet. Every day of delay increases the risk.

## Safe update steps

1. **Take a full backup:** Files and database together, from cPanel or your hosting backup tool. Read [why backups matter](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/the-importance-of-backing-up-your-hosting-sites/).
2. **Test on a staging copy for important sites:** If WP Toolkit is available in your account, use its Clone feature to make a staging copy and update it first.
3. **Update plugins one at a time:** And open the site after each update. This way you know which plugin caused a problem, if any.
4. **Then the theme:** If you edited theme files directly, your changes will be lost. Use a child theme for customizations.
5. **Then WordPress itself:** Minor updates (such as 6.5.1 to 6.5.2) are usually security fixes and safe. Major updates deserve more testing.
6. **Test what matters:** The home page, the contact form, the cart and checkout for stores, and the dashboard.

## Site broke after an update?

1. **Do not delete anything:** The problem is usually a single plugin.
2. **Disable the plugin causing it:** Rename its folder inside wp-content/plugins from the File Manager. Read [disabling all WordPress plugins](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/disable-wordpress-plugins-cpanel/).
3. **Or restore your backup:** The one you took before updating, then update again carefully.
4. **Check your PHP version:** Some recent plugins need a newer PHP version, which you can change in cPanel.

**Automatic updates:** enable them for trusted plugins and minor security releases. For stores and large sites, weekly manual updates with a backup are better.
