# How to Choose a Safe WordPress Plugin or Theme Before Installing It: 8 Checks

**In short**Most WordPress hacks come from a plugin or theme: either an old one that is no longer updated, or a nulled copy with malicious code. Before installing any plugin, make sure it comes from the official directory or the developer’s site, was updated in recent months, is compatible with your WordPress version, has good installs and reviews, and has no open vulnerabilities. And keep the number of plugins low.

## 8 checks before installing

1. **Source:** The official WordPress directory wordpress.org/plugins, or the developer’s official site only.
2. **Last update:** A plugin not updated for more than a year is usually abandoned, and its flaws will not be fixed.
3. **Compatibility:** The plugin page shows the latest WordPress version it was tested with. It should be close to yours.
4. **Active installs:** Widely used plugins get problems found and fixed faster.
5. **Reviews and support:** Read the negative reviews, and see whether the developer answers support questions.
6. **Vulnerability history:** Search for the plugin in a WordPress vulnerability database such as WPScan. A past flaw fixed quickly is normal; an open one is not.
7. **Permissions requested:** A simple plugin that asks for wide permissions or sends data to outside servers deserves caution.
8. **Do you really need it?** Every plugin is another door. If the feature is simple, your theme or an existing plugin may already provide it.

## Why are nulled copies dangerous?

A “free” copy of a paid theme or plugin from an unofficial site is often modified: it may contain a backdoor, hidden links, or code that sends out your site’s data. And it never gets updates. Read [what a C99 shell is](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/hacking-tools-c99-shell/) and [types of website malware](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/website-malware-types/).

| | Official copy | Nulled copy |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Updates | Ongoing | None |
| Code | As written by the developer | May be altered with malicious code |
| Support | Available | None |
| Risk | Low | Very high |

## After installing

- Turn on automatic updates for trusted plugins, or update them weekly. Read [updating WordPress safely](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/update-wordpress-safely/).

- Scan your site regularly. Read [scanning WordPress for vulnerabilities](https://www.hyyat.com/en/knowledgebase/wordpress-vulnerability-scan-wp-toolkit/).

## How Hyyat Host protects your site

- WP Toolkit in [cPanel](https://www.hyyat.com/en/cpanel-hosting/) alerts you to plugins and themes with known vulnerabilities.
- **ImunifyAV** scans plugin and theme files daily for malicious code.
- **Imunify360** and **ModSecurity** rules block exploitation of known flaws.

## Frequently asked questions

Are paid plugins safer than free ones?

Not necessarily. What matters is an official source and regular updates, whether free or paid.

   How many plugins are recommended?

There is no fixed number. What matters is that you really need each one, and that all are updated.

I found an abandoned plugin on my site. What now?

Find an updated alternative with the same feature, then remove the abandoned one after checking the site works.
